A Unity Sand Ceremony is a symbolic wedding ritual where a couple pours different colored sand into a single container to represent two lives joined as one in marriage. Just as the grains of sand can never be separated, so too are the couple bonded forever in love. But the symbolism doesn't end there – your unity sand colors can have meaning too!
The beautiful Unity Sand ritual can be incorporated into a wedding ceremony, vow renewal ceremony, or commitment ceremony as a symbol of unending devotion, collaboration, and partnership. It’s also a great unity ceremony for a blended family as a symbol of their bond – each person gets their own color of sand to add to the whole, including children, parents, grandparents, and other important loved ones. The Unity Sand Ceremony wedding ritual can be secular (nonreligious), religious, spiritual, and even magical in meaning.
The colors you choose for your unity sand can hold special meaning, adding to the symbolism of the ritual. You might choose colors that match your wedding decor, complementary or contrasting colors for visual impact, or colors that symbolize something meaningful about your personality and values. In Pagan and Wiccan weddings, unity sand colors can even invoke specific intentions with energetic or spellcasting powers – a part of witchcraft called color magic, or color magick. In this case, sand colors can be used to draw certain things toward you in marriage, or keep certain things away.

Whether you believe that colors hold magical or energetic properties, or simply love the beauty and symbolism of color on the wedding day, it’s worthwhile to put some thought into your unity sand colors.
You can use 2 or more colors in your Unity Sand Ceremony. Use an extra color for anyone else you want to include in the ritual, such as children, a polyamorous partner, or to symbolize the presence of God in your marriage. Some couples also use different colors of sand to represent the different values or blessings they want to cultivate in their marriage.
