Below are a few simple ideas (and a little advice) to help you start planning the perfect costume wedding celebration.
A cosplay wedding is a costumed wedding celebration – the couple getting married dress up in costume, along with some or all of their guests.
Cosplay themes can be specific, like a ‘Harry Potter wedding' or 'Marvel wedding theme,' or they might be open ended, like an ‘elven wedding,’ in which guests can choose a costume based on the theme. And some couples throw cosplay weddings with no set theme – just an invitation to dress up like your favorite character from literature, sci-fi, fantasy, fairytale, comic books, history, or other inspiration.
As a great example, the legendary Jamie Lee Curtis officiated a cosplay wedding for her daughter Ruby and partner Kynthia a couple years ago. Check out their costumes in the photo below!
Guests at Ruby and Kynthia's wedding in 2022 were encouraged to dress up as World of Warcraft characters, including Jamie Lee Curtis as wedding officiant!
Find a great cosplay designer and commission a custom suit or wedding dress inspired by your favorite characters. And if a designer isn’t in your budget (In this economy? We get it!), you’ve still got lots of options: check out the cosplay wedding dresses and accessories on Etsy, repurpose a vintage wedding dress; or style a DIY fit with some help from friends.

A lesbian Batman and Snow White wedding? YES! This cute couple went all out for their cosplay wedding, with Ursula, Cruella de Vil, Jafar, and Robin in the wedding crew!
Ask your wedding officiant to join in on the fun! A few of our favorite cosplay wedding officiant ideas are Batman, Gandalf, Ganondorf, Dr. Who, or Captain Marvel. Don’t miss this opportunity to have a cosplay wedding officiant!
Our favorite officiant choice is to ask a friend or relative to marry you – friends and relatives can get ordained online to officiate a wedding, and online ordination is free with American Marriage Ministries. AMM’s online ordinations are legally recognized in every state* (it’s much harder in Virginia, where we’re looking into our options).
Having a friend officiate your wedding is a lot of fun, super meaningful, and you know they’ll get your costumes and appreciate the wedding vibe.
Once your friend has become an online ordained minister, they might need to register locally in the state where you’re getting married. This is almost always a straightforward process, but plan ahead because it might take a couple of weeks to complete. (Click the link below to check the minister registration requirements and process in your wedding state.)
If you’d rather hire a professional wedding officiant to marry you, no problem! There are many pro wedding officiants across the country who are dying to dress up as a Jedi or Deadpool or Green Lantern or Beetlejuice or… well you get the idea. Lots of pro wedding officiants will jump at the chance to marry you in a cosplay wedding if that’s important to you, but keep in mind that they might charge you extra for costume purchases or a custom wedding ceremony script.

Some of your guests might not be into costumes, or might be able to afford the added expense of a costume to attend your wedding. That’s ok!
Include an optional non-cosplay dress code on your wedding invitations or wedding website so that costume-free guests know what to wear – for example ‘formal wear’ or ‘cocktail attire.’
Then, provide fun and easy accessories as wedding favors at the entrance table. This gives all your guests the option to join in if they want to, for example: retro superhero masks that only cover the eyes; headbands, horns, and ears; ‘potion bottles’ that double as bubbles; comic book themed wedding fans /hand fans; or capes or cowls for the wedding party.

If a few of your wedding guests who aren't into costumes, consider simple cosplay-inspired wedding favors like masks, capes, or themed fans, which they can hold or use during the ceremony. This helps ensure that everyone's included, comfortable, and having fun!
Cosplay weddings are a lot of fun, but they can also be difficult or expensive to pull off. If you find yourself struggling to plan something that everyone can agree on, there's nothing wrong with keeping things a little more lowkey. Consider adding a few subtle geeky accents to your outfit or decor without going ‘full’ cosplay – like a pair of Superman cufflinks; a wedding party carrying lightsabers; walking down the aisle with a Captain America shield that compliments your suit; decorating your tables with action figures or Pop! figures; design fairytale or comic book themed centerpieces or cake, or making your wedding exit in the Batmobile…
Remember, your wedding should be fun! If a full cosplay wedding seems too tough or too expensive to pull off, keep it simple!
Wedding planning is stressful even when you aren’t trying to find fairy wings that will stay put during your first dance…
To make it easier, consider sticking with a single theme. This way, you can incorporate details into your decor too, and take some pressure off the costume component. It will also give you and your guests a clear aesthetic or ‘look’ to aspire to! For example, a few of our favorite cosplay wedding themes are:
Alternatively, plan a Halloween wedding (on or around the holiday) and let guests choose any costume, character, and theme they like! Costume weddings can be a little easier to plan and understand for non-cosplayers, and you might have a better costume turn out.

Last, remember that at its heart, a cosplay wedding is still a wedding – the celebration of your love and the formal beginning of your marriage. It’s a big day with a lot of meaning behind it, even if the tone is lighthearted or funny.
So whether you’re wearing an elven bridal gown and cape, or a three piece suit – spend time making your wedding a true reflection of your relationship, values, hopes, and dreams for the years ahead: write personal wedding vows, choose wedding readings that reflect how you feel about each other and about marriage, or include a special unity ceremony that symbolizes your bond.
What to wear: Cosplay weddings are nontraditional, so you can wear any color or costume you want to, like this gorgeous golden gown inspired by Belle from Disney's Beauty and the Beast. (Photo: Kharchenko_irina7 / iStock)
