Britney Spears Marries Herself as ‘Solo-Marriage’ Trend Continues

Published Tuesday, Oct. 22nd, 2024

Here comes the bride and... just the bride. The solo wedding & self love trend continues with newly-self-wed Britney Spears.

Britney Spears said 'I do' to self-love with a symbolic sologamist wedding, or 'solo wedding'

Britney Spears appears to be the latest celebrity to embrace the ‘self-marriage’ or ‘sologamy’ trend with a recent post on Instagram.

The songstress posted a photo of herself in a wedding dress and veil yesterday and captioned it: “The day I married myself … Bringing it back because it might seem embarrassing or stupid, but I think it’s the most brilliant thing I’ve ever done !!!”

Brit, we don't think it's embarrassing or stupid. Lots of people are saying 'I do' in celebrations of self-love these days!

'Self-marriage' or 'Sologamy' has been popular for years

Some news outlets (including TMZ) have called the post “bizarre,” but Britney is far from being the first woman, or even the first celebrity, to announce a symbolic solo marriage in the last few decades.

The practice of self-marriage has actually been fairly common for years now! Even if you've never heard the term 'sologamy,' you're probably familiar with the concept. Sologamy is the symbolic act of getting married to yourself -- with or without a solo wedding ceremony.

We wrote about the sologamy phenomenon in 2023, including a sample script of what to say at a solo wedding ceremony:

Earlier this year, social media influencer Suellen Carey announced her solo marriage in an Instagram post, writing:

“Yes…I am sologamous. Over time I discovered and understood what I wanted. Today I value and love myself, I married myself here in London. This celebration is important because I learned to prioritize my well-being and mental health. In my vows, I wrote and declared my commitment to caring for and valuing my self-love. This is one of the happiest days of my life, I am grateful and very happy. I hope to inspire other people here too.”

In 2022, Business Insider reported that “‘Sologamy,’ or marrying oneself, has been on the rise among women" following the COVID-19 pandemic, and that “some women throw themselves lavish weddings.”

In 2021, Brides Magazine wrote about symbolic self-marriages, saying “the growing popularity of sologamy in recent years is linked to losing ourselves in our fast-paced lives.”

In 2019, actor Emma Watson told British Vogue that she was ‘self-partnered,’ and that she’s “very happy [being single].”

In 2017, Brazilian supermodel and Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima famously announced her plans to marry herself by posting a photo with an engagement ring on Instagram, writing, “I am married with me.” Her self-marriage was celebrated soon after with a large write up in Vogue Australia.

Model Adriana Lima announced she was married to herself in 2017 with an Instagram post captioned: "WHATS UP WITH THE RING? ITS SYMBOLIC, I AM COMMITTED TO MYSELF AND MY OWN HAPPINESS I AM MARRIED WITH ME. LADIES LOVE YOURSELF AND YES I AM SINGLE [sic].” (Quote reported by Stylist) (Photo: Toglenn, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons)

In 2016, Swedish author Sara Starkström threw herself a wedding for one. She wore a wedding dress, made vows to herself, and changed her name to celebrate a new chapter of independence and self-love. (via Independent Women’s Forum)

In 2003, the fictional-but-influential Carrie Bradshaw announced on Sex and the City that she’d be marrying herself in a solo-wedding as a show of independence and self-love. That episode, "A Woman's Right to Shoes," is still considered iconic.

And way back in 1993, the LA Times shared a story about a woman named Linda Baker who threw herself a large formal wedding with friends and family members in attendance.

The trend has also been reported on by BBC and Teen Vogue (both in 2017), CNN (in 2023), by USA Today (in 2022)… and numerous other mainstream sources.

Which is all to say, sologamy is not new.

It’s certainly not bizarre, despite the criticism against Britney Spears. If anything, many people can probably relate to a renewed commitment to self-love later in life.

And given the state of the current dating scene, we’ll probably see many more of these symbolic ceremonies for people of all genders in the years to come.

Because for better or worse, in sickness and in health, we always have ourselves – we might as well celebrate it!
