Here at AMM, we write a lot of advice for first-time wedding officiants, especially those asked to officiate for friends and relatives. But to be honest, we never thought to include “don’t moon the wedding guests without permission” to our list of Wedding Officiant Dos and Don’ts.
Perhaps this was a mistake on our part: A distraught Mother-of-the-Bride wrote in to the New York Times this week with a vivid story of a wedding officiant mooning the guests mid-ceremony.
But not just any wedding officiant – the groom’s brother, co-officiating alongside the bride’s sister. The scandalous cheek attack came shortly after the vow exchange, when said brother swiftly pulled down his pants to reveal temporary tattoos of the newlyweds’ names on his bare butt cheeks.

We don’t know whether or not the newlyweds knew about the unorthodox show of affection ahead of time, but by the Mother-in-Law’s account, the entire wedding party was unfazed. (Maybe they’d seen it all before at the bach party?)
Regardless, no one except Mom complained, the ceremony went on, and (presumably) the brother buttoned back up before heading to the dance floor. No harm, no foul?
Still, it should probably be said:
Wedding officiants should keep their pants on, unless bare butts have been cleared with the couple.
Even if it is your brother’s wedding. (And even if he does have it coming.)
