How to Get Rid of Ghosts & Ward Off Evil Spirits at Weddings

Nobody wants a wedding crasher on their big day, especially if they’re supernatural! That’s why many cultures have devised rituals to ward off evil spirits and banish negative energies at these special celebrations. Below, we take a closer look at how to get rid of ghosts and keep otherworldly guests away on your wedding day.

5 Rituals for Getting Rid of Ghosts & Evil Spirits at Weddings

1. Using a Wedding Veil to Disguise the Bride from Devious Demons & Witches

One way to ward off evil spirits at a wedding? Disguise the bride in a wedding veil! Evil spirits won’t recognize her, and they won’t stick around to ruin the celebration. This wedding tradition dates back to ancient Greek and Roman times, when veils were used to hide a bride’s face from devious demons and witches who might want to put a curse on her before the ceremony could occur.

Throw evil spirits off the trail at your own wedding by choosing a stunning signature wedding veil in your favorite color/s!

2. Spitting to Ward Off Evil Spirits at Wedding Celebrations

The tradition of spitting to ward off evil spirits at wedding celebrations – or at least pretending to spit – can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece. Guests at Greek weddings pretend to spit on the couple being married (in most cases three times) to ward off the curse of the Evil Eye, and all the bad luck it brings.

There’s no actual spitting in this Greek tradition, however! On the wedding day, pretend to spit three times in the direction of the newlyweds, but be sure to keep your saliva to yourself.

3. Bridesmaids Wearing Matching Dresses to Confuse the Devil

The tradition of a bride choosing bridesmaids dates all the way back to ancient Roman, and it actually has everything to do with getting rid of ghosts and demons! Back then, bridesmaids wore elaborate dresses with lots of frills and lace to confuse the Devil, who was waiting to kidnap the bride on her wedding day. With so many women walking around in fancy dresses, the Devil couldn’t tell which one was the true bride, and his evil plan was thwarted every time.

Put this ritual to work on your own wedding day by dressing your friends in the most elaborate, over-the-top dresses or jumpsuits you can find. The bolder the better! The Devil will never see you coming.

4. Ringing Wedding Bells to Ward Off Evil Spirits

Are wedding bells ringing in the chapel? The sound of bells has been used to scare off lurking spirits and ghosts for centuries, and that’s actually how the whole ‘wedding bells’ tradition started! Churches in ancient Ireland and Scotland would ring their tower bells at the start and end of weddings to keep phantoms away, and to grant the wishes of newlyweds.

Embrace this Celtic wedding tradition by placing hand bells on a table for guests to ring in celebration after your first kiss at the end of the ceremony.

5. Adding Aromatic Herbs & Flowers to Your Wedding Bouquet to Ward Off Troublesome Spirits

What smell wards off evil spirits at weddings? You have your pick! According to various folklore and witchcraft practices, the smell of lavender, sage, rosemary, cedarwood, and juniper are all effective at getting rid of ghosts and malevolent spirits. These botanicals make a beautiful addition to traditional wedding bouquets or as decoration for the altar. They’re also known for having a calming effect when used as aromatic oils or incense!
