This is definitely one of the most creative engagement ideas we’ve seen in the past few years: editing yourself into a movie to propose marriage.
Choose your partner’s favorite movie, add in a special scene where a character that looks like you pops the question, then hand your sweetheart the engagement ring irl.
If this sounds like the perfect way to ask your gf or bf to marry you, take a look at the creative ways these romantics made it happen – and how you can do it too!
Back in 2020, Boston filmmaker Lee Loechler spent six months editing the classic Sleeping Beauty film to include animated versions of him and his girlfriend Sthuthi David – then took her to see the edited movie at a theater for a special screening.

In the new scene, Loechler (as an original Prince Charming), wakes David with a sweet kiss, and holds out an engagement ring box. At the same time, irl, Loechler stands in the theater and proposes to David, while friends and family in the audience clap and cheer. A great start to the couple’s happily ever after!
I proposed to my girlfriend of four years by editing myself into a movie!

If you don’t have the budget (or time) to hire a professional, do the creative work yourself and watch the movie at home! There are video editing apps and software designed to help you edit yourself into a movie, cartoon, or animated film – with or without a greenscreen.

Consider options like CapCut (simple), After Effects or Davinci Resolve (advanced), or an AI face-swapping platform (just check the privacy policy first). You can take a highly-technical approach (not recommended for first-time editors), a simple approach, or aim for something in between.
Unless you’re a video-editing expert, your proposal scene probably won’t look professional-quality. But you’re not trying to win an Oscar – just their heart! Any imperfections will be endearing; your effort matters more than your editing skills.
Instead of editing yourself into a existing movie, consider creating a unique movie trailer or short film in the style of your sweetheart’s favorite film. This option works best if your partner prefers something low-pressure, and you don’t have to wait through the first half of a film to get to the most exciting part: The Question! Play the trailer before a movie to start your cozy night at home with a romantic proposal.
To make an animated or live action movie trailer, consider hiring a freelance professional familiar with animation software, editing software, or AI video platforms. If you don’t have the budget to hire a professional, plan ahead to ensure you have plenty of time to learn your chosen program or software before beginning your project.

A personalized movie proposal is a creative, unexpected, and romantic way to ask your partner to marry you. It reminds them how well you know them – and creates a new love story that’s entirely yours!
This type of proposal is best for movie fans, imaginative and creative couples, and hopeless romantics. Picture your sweetheart’s face the moment a familiar scene shifts to include them – and the excitement you’ll both feel the moment they say YES!
