Good news on a Monday? Heck YES. This morning, The Supreme Court declined to reopen the debate on same-sex marriage rights, turning down a request from former county-clerk Kim Davis to revisit their 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision which recognized the constitutional right to same-sex marriage.
Kim Davis, as you might remember, refused to issue a marriage license to a gay couple in Kentucky in 2015, shortly after Obergefell was passed. It cost Davis her job, along with hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees. This year, Davis petitioned the Supreme Court to reconsider their 2015 decision in favor of same-sex marriage, with the hope that she wouldn't have to pay damages. Thankfully, they just turned her down.
The news comes as a relief to LGBTQ+ folks across the country, as well as friends, families, and allies. This win should be celebrated! After a year of continous legislative and community clashes over LGBTQ+ rights, and real harm to LGBTQ+ lives, we're grateful that same-sex marriage will remain protected and recognized at the federal level.
We hope Kim Davis, and any others who want to overturn Obergefell, finally get the message.
