An AMM Minister in Ohio is hosting an LGBTQ+ wedding planning event called "Rewriting the Script Workshop" this November, to help couples connect with welcoming vendors and venues!
Meet Officiant Brittany Wasson, a recent alum of AMM’s Officiant Accelerator Columbus seminar, and owner of Prismatic Ceremonies in Youngstown, Ohio.

Brittany is new to officiating – her first wedding was earlier this year – but she’s hit the ground running. In addition to Professional Wedding Officiant Certification with AMM, she’s also a member of the International Association of Professional Wedding Officiants (IAPWO), the Safe Space Alliance, and is currently enrolled in the LGBTQ+ Inclusive Certification Course with Equally Wed Pro. With such a dedication to continuing education, it’s perhaps no surprise that she’s almost entirely booked through the end of the year and is already booking 2026 wedding dates.
On November 13th, 2025, Brittany’s putting all that positive momentum to good use with a brand new wedding planning event for LGBTQ+ couples: the first-ever "Rewriting the Script Workshop."
“Rewriting the Script” is a free two-hour event designed for LGBTQ+ couples and allies who are new to wedding planning and want tips on finding queer-friendly wedding vendors and venues. The event will take place at Full Spectrum Community Outreach Center, a local LGBTQ+ center, and will include advice on how to plan an authentic ceremony, connect with affirming vendors, and handle outside pressures as the big day approaches.
We love a queer-friendly wedding event, so we reached out to Brittany to learn more about what couples can expect; here’s what she had to say:
“Most couples don't really know what [is and isn’t required] in a wedding ceremony. So we're going to break down the current wedding ‘script’ of what's expected, and then reframe [it] so people can see that if they want to reinvent or completely trash ‘traditions,’ they can.
We'll also discuss finding actual affirming wedding vendors, and dealing with family or friends pressure.
Then [during] an interactive part [of the workshop,] participants create a mini-roadmap of their ideal way to get married using my ‘The Rule Breakers' Method Workbook,’ which is kinda a Marie Kondo way of thinking about weddings – dump everything out, recognize what you don't want, and only put back in what brings you joy. Those who are comfortable can share, and then we'll have Q&A. And snacks.”
(Snacks are a sure way to get us there. Or anywhere, honestly… but let’s keep going. Here’s more info from Brittany.)
“The event is being hosted by Full Spectrum Community Outreach Center which throws [Ohio's] Pride in The Valley and has so many wonderful programs for our local LGBTQ+ community.
I'm hoping to humanize the wedding industry which can seem like a big, unfamiliar, bossy thing – and take some of the unknown out of it. I want couples to feel like they learned at least one thing new, to feel like they have support, to feel empowered that they know what they're doing and can make the right decisions for themselves and their weddings.”
(Rad!)
In addition to being a good time, this planning workshop comes at an important time. Ohio legislators have passed a slew of anti-LGBTQ bills in the past year, including an anti-trans bathroom ban and an ongoing fight to ban gender-affirming care for young people; have proposed bans on drag performances; and even introduced legislation to create a new “Natural Family Month” that would celebrate heterosexual families with children as the only ‘natural’ family.
And on the broader horizon, LGBTQ+ couples everywhere are braced for the potential overturn of Obergefell v. Hodges as SCOTUS determines whether or not to hear a new appeal from former Kentucky clerk Kim Davis. (Yes, that Kim Davis, the one who refused to issue a marriage license to a gay couple in 2015. Ten years later and she’s still trying to get in the way of love.)

These laws, policies, and politicians don’t exist in a vacuum – they’re already affecting real people in a real way. And they don’t “stay put;” eliminating protections for LGBTQ+ families in one area of public life has a way of spilling over into all parts of life. Even the wedding industry is feeling it.
Brittany referenced the current state of things when we asked her about the initial inspiration behind the workshop. She’s queer herself, and has queer family members and friends. She told us:
“I had planned to partner with my local LGBTQ+ community center for a workshop at some point, but two things told me this needed to happen now.
First, the news that marriage equality might go before the Supreme Court again. I know that has created worry in the community but also I think emboldened anti-affirming vendors and venues to be louder.
Second, was when another Ohio officiant shared in a Facebook group that their same-sex couple had all affirming wedding vendors but was still feeling a lot of anxiety and grief because they felt shoved into boxes they didn't fit by the wedding industry as a whole. None of that is acceptable to me and I want to help change that fear and uncertainty in my local community.”
We definitely agree that no one should take marriage equality for granted, and that making the wedding industry more inclusive, welcoming, and affirming for everyone should be a top priority. That means all of us – officiants, florists, photographers, venues, wedding content creators, you name it – listening, speaking up, and working together within our communities.
We’re excited to hear how "Rewriting the Script" goes, and we hope there’s an awesome turnout.

A: “I want couples to know that I've got their back. That they will experience me as both warm and competent. Weddings come with a lot of pressure from family and social expectations as well as the industry standards that saturate Pinterest feeds. My role is to help couples cut through all that noise and get rid of all the parts they don't like and keep only the parts they do (plus the legal parts). And I'm not just saying that - breaking the "wedding rules" is my goal (at whatever level couples want to break the rules).”
