Ministers who are ordained online through American Marriage Ministries can perform weddings in North Carolina. The law is clear on this, and it’s been confirmed multiple times.
But occasionally, we hear from ministers who have been told by a registrar or clerk that their credentials aren’t valid in the state. This false information is sometimes shared online and in conversation, and can spread quickly throughout the officiant community.
Clerks and registrars who provide inaccurate information (whether intentionally or accidentally) can create a lot of confusion, especially for professional wedding officiants and ministers who want to ensure that the services they provide are legal. Inaccurate information like this also leads to unnecessary stress and uncertainty for engaged couples, who aren’t sure if they can ask a friend or relative to get ordained online to marry them. (They can, by the way.)
So to help stop this confusion at the source, we’re turning to you – our ministers on the ground in North Carolina!
If you’re an AMM Minister living anywhere in North Carolina and have been told by someone working in a Register of Deeds office that you cannot solemnize a marriage because you’ve been ordained online, please let us know.
