Secret wedding rumors are lighting up socials this week after Zendaya was spotted wearing what could be a wedding ring. But like the rest of the internet, we can’t say for sure if Zendaya and Tom Holland are married or not. Here’s how they might have joined a growing list of celebrity couples who tied the knot in secret.
Secret weddings aren’t new in the celebrity set. Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes did it in the early-2010s. John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette did it in the 1990s. Ronald and Nancy Reagan did it in the 1950s. And a sitting-president, John Tyler, even married a young Julia Gardiner in secret in the 1800s!
These hush-hush nuptials are especially popular in Hollywood, where A-listers are forced to dodge paparazzi just to get a cup of coffee in private. And since California offers a special “confidential marriage license,” the star-studded state also happens to be one of the few US states where a truly secret wedding is possible.
If Zendaya and Tom wanted to, they could easily apply for a confidential marriage license to keep their union private. These special licenses are available anywhere in California, issued by either a local County Clerk's office, or by an authorized notary in LA County. Unlike most state marriage licenses – which become public record as soon as they’re filed – confidential licenses are never made public. Couples can be legally married for years without anyone finding out.
There’s also the possibility that Zendaya and Tom eloped in secret, and that the records just haven’t surfaced yet. Planning a super-private, intimate elopement is easy. Don’t tell anyone you’re getting hitched, hire a private wedding officiant, and exchange vows out of view of nosey pay-per-shot photographers – and your marriage stays off radar (until someone decides to go looking through local public records).

So, are Zendaya and Tom married? There’s no confirmation one way or the other yet, and these rumors have been circulating for a few days now.
If the couple filed a public marriage license, it would probably have turned up by now – unless they married in Holland’s hometown ‘hood, Kingston upon Thames, in southwest London.

That means the more-likely option is that the couple applied for a confidential marriage license – or even more likely, they aren’t married yet.
Time will tell!
