In Idaho, the marriage license and marriage certificate are printed as a single document, with a top and bottom copy. The top copy (with the gold seal) is given to the couple to keep, and the bottom copy must be returned to the Recorder’s office by the officiant within 30 days of the ceremony.
Couples must purchase their license ahead of time and bring it with them to the wedding ceremony.

Couples will be given detailed instructions and a sample marriage license / certificate by the County Recorder to use as a reference. Follow any instructions given to you by the Recorder.
Below is an example of a Kootenai County marriage license / certificate, with the appropriate sections labeled for the officiant and optional witnesses to sign. Each numbered space corresponds to an item on the instruction sheet directly underneath.
If a license is issued in Ada County, Cannon County, or elsewhere, it may look slightly different but the process will be the same. This image is only for educational purposes; if you have specific questions, reach out to the County Recorder’s office.

Each numbered item on this instruction sheet corresponds to a space on the marriage certificate that must be completed by the wedding officiant following the ceremony.
If you make a mistake while filling out a marriage license – such as a misspelled name, incorrect date, or wrong color ink – the couple might need to purchase a replacement license before it can be filed with the Recorder. This is usually a straightforward process.
Since each county has its own process for correcting errors, we recommend you contact the Recorder’s office directly with your questions. This will be the simplest way to handle any issues that come up.
If you need to amend an Idaho marriage license after it's filed, complete and submit a Correction Request Form through the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.
Yes, ministers who are ordained online through a reputable and recognized church, including American Marriage Ministries, can officiate weddings in Idaho and sign your marriage license. No local registration is needed, which means once you’re ordained, you’re authorized to officiate.

However, not all online-ordained ministers are legally qualified to perform marriages in all states. If your officiant is ordained online with a church other than American Marriage Ministries, it’s important to verify their minister credentials before they perform your wedding ceremony:
Marriage license fees may vary slightly by county, averaging between $30 to $50. For the most current Idaho marriage license cost, click the link below or contact your local Recorder’s office:
The amount of time you spend in the Recorder’s office will vary depending on where you apply for your license. But because there’s no waiting period in Idaho to marry, most couples can apply for a marriage license and use it on the same day.
How long a marriage license is valid in each state is called the “expiration period.” This is the number of days or months your license is “good for,” or the amount of time you have to use your license after it’s issued. Your ceremony must take place within this timeframe. To see the current Idaho marriage license expiration period, click the link below:
A certified copy of your marriage license can be purchased directly from the County Recorder’s office where it was originally filed. Certified copies can be requested by either party in the marriage, or a close relative.
If you need a replacement copy of a damaged or misplaced marriage license before it’s been filed, contact the issuing office directly for next steps.
If you need to correct or amend an Idaho marriage license after it's filed, start by contacting the Recorder's office where the license was originally filed. The process for amending a filed license varies by county, and the Recorder will be able to walk you through the necessary steps.
Now that we’ve covered the frequent questions about filling out an Idaho marriage license, let’s take a brief look at some less common concerns.
Yes, marriage licenses are public records in the State of Idaho. They are recorded by the County Recorder before being sent on to the State of Idaho Bureau of Vital Records.

An Idaho marriage license can only be used for a wedding ceremony performed within the State of Idaho. After the marriage has been officially recorded, your marriage will be legally recognized and valid in every U.S. state.
An Idaho marriage license can't be "canceled," but it can expire if it's not used within 1 year of being issued. If you decided not to get married before the ceremony, contact the Recorder's office for instructions on what to do with your unused license. They might require you to return it so that it can be properly destroyed.
If the ceremony has already taken place, you and your officiant are legally required to return the license to the Recorder's office. If you no longer want to be married, your options may include annulment or voiding the marriage, or divorce. Contact the Recorder’s office (and an attorney) for the best advice in your unique situation.
