We love professional wedding photographers for making us look polished and poised on the wedding day. But there’s a certain angle of the day that even professional candid photos can’t capture – the wedding guest POV!
That’s where the humble wedding selfie really shines. Wedding selfies are an up-close-and-personal way for you and your wedding guests to capture the organic moments of the wedding day, and turn them into lasting memories. Selfies are a simple way to snapshot the joy, excitement, love, and playful mischief-making that a great wedding day can bring.
Even better, there are several fun ways to incorporate and encourage selfies at your wedding or vow renewal celebration, even if you’re planning an ‘unplugged’ wedding ceremony, with no cameras or phones allowed during the ceremony.
Below are a few of our favorite ways to incorporate selfies into your wedding. Mix and match your favorite ideas, try them all, or get creative with a personal twist on one of the suggestions below.
Ask your wedding officiant to take a selfie with you! This is especially meaningful when you ask a close friend or relative to officiate your wedding. An officiant selfie can happen in front of the wedding altar before the ceremony begins, or after you've taken your vows and are officially newlyweds, like the happy picture above shows. The wedding officiant selfie! This is our absolute favorite way to include a selfie on the wedding day. All you have to do is ask your wedding officiant to take a selfie with you at the wedding altar (or at the front of the room) before your ceremony begins, with your guests in the background of the photo.
This photo will probably have the most unique perspective of any you take that day, and it’s a fun way to include your officiant.
This selfie becomes even more meaningful when you ask a friend or relative to officiate your ceremony! Have a close friend perform your wedding, and snap a photo with them right before the ceremony starts to commemorate the closeness and excitement you feel. Friends can get ordained online free with American Marriage Ministries to officiate.
You’ll want to remember this moment forever, the moment right before you got married! Check out the TikTok below to see an example of the 'wedding officiant selfie.'
Pro Tip: If you post this selfie on social media, be sure to tag your wedding officiant!
This is a great option for an unplugged wedding ceremony: Grab that special selfie, then ask everyone to stash their phones and cameras until the reception begins. You’ll have the best photo possible without any further distractions, and your wedding officiant can help find the right wording for this request: What to Say at the Start of an Unplugged Wedding Ceremony

A selfie station is a specific location at the wedding reception where guests can take a selfie against a fun background or while holding a fun prop.
Guests can use their own cameras or phones to take the selfie, or you can provide polaroid cameras or disposable cameras for them to use. There are lots of ways to set up a selfie station; two of our favorite ideas are below.
One of the most popular wedding photo booth props is a ‘wedding selfie frame.’ This is a cute, oversized cardboard frame that guests can hold up in front of themselves while having a photo snapped. In this case, another guest will usually take the photo to make sure the entire frame is, well, in frame (rather than a traditional selfie).
Guests can also hold up a decorative sign with the newlyweds’ names and wedding date written across it, or pose with fun props like heart glasses, masquerade masks, or speech bubble signs with funny phrases like “The ‘I Do’ Crew,” “Wedding Crashers,” “It’s About Time!” or “Best Wedding Ever.”
For a simple photo booth or selfie station, purchase or DIY a cute backdrop. Use colorful tulle, strands of lights, flowers, a natural scenic background, theme elements, or a favorite mural.
Choose an assortment of fun wedding selfie props to use; these can be funny, sweet, and everything in between. Arrange them at your selfie station or next to the photo booth, or place them on a selfie table with disposable or polaroid cameras for guests to use. This fun idea is a twist on the wedding reception ‘dollar dance’ or ‘money dance.’ But instead of guests tossing money at you or pinning it to your clothes, they’re snapping a selfie with you!
This is a great way to make sure you have a personal photo with every guest at your wedding.

This is a simple way to make sure you have some sweet and silly selfies from your wedding day: Ask guests to take selfies, and provide a link where they can upload their photos (such as a Google Drive folder or Dropbox folder).
On your wedding invitations or in the event-details section of your wedding website, explain that this is a ‘selfie wedding’ and that you want everyone to snap photos of themselves having a great time throughout the celebration. Be sure to include a link for them to upload photos after the event.
If you want specific types of photos, let your guests know: ask them to snap selfies with you in the background, selfies in front of the wedding arch, selfies on the dancefloor, selfies on the way to the wedding venue, selfies over afterparty drinks and dinner, next-day wedding hangover selfies, and so on.
(Just remember that beauty – and great photos – are in the eye of the beholder. You might end up with photos that have more heart than skill... Keep your expectations flexible if you choose this approach, or choose it in addition to posed professional photos.)
If you don’t want to worry about rounding up photos after the event (or don’t trust all of your guests to upload their selfies in a timely way), then handing out cameras at the celebration is probably the best choice.
Set up a table with polaroid cameras or disposable film cameras for guests to use. Guests can wander around with these cameras during the reception, snapping selfies with you and other guests, and then return them to the table before they leave. This can be especially fun when kids get their hands on the cameras, and is another sweet kid-friendly way to include children in the wedding day.
Afterwards, you can develop your disposable cameras on your own timeline, or mount polaroids in a frame (or place them in a wedding album) to remember the day.
Don't forget to snap a few wedding selfies of your own on your wedding day! Grab some candid shots with your besties before and after the ceremony. These organic moments will last a lifetime! (Photo: shironosov / iStock)
Good things happen when friends and relatives help out at the wedding ceremony! Having a friend officiate your elopement is a great way to ensure the wedding day is as intimate and personal as it can be. When the guest list is small, every moment means more!
Ask a friend or family member to officiate your wedding with free online ordination through American Marriage Ministries (AMM).

Why AMM? American Marriage Ministries is an inclusive nondenominational internet church that ordains and trains ministers to officiate marriage ceremonies. We are a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit church, and help people from all backgrounds and beliefs become ordained ministers for weddings. Our online ordination is free, accessible, and never expires.
Officiating weddings is an incredible honor, and a great way to show your love and support for the people getting married. As a wedding officiant, you will help to create memorable ceremonies and memories that last a lifetime.
AMM Ministers can legally officiate weddings in every state* (it's much harder in Virginia, where we're looking into our options). After getting ordained with AMM, you might need to register your ordination with your local county clerk’s office. Click the link above to get started!
