No, Kanye West and Bianca Censori aren't really married

At least, not yet. Probably. And why (oh why) AMM is talking about this…

 

Kanye West made headlines again this week with a surprise announcement that he married Bianca Censori, an architectural designer with Yeezy. 

 

But according to mulitple news reports, the couple never applied for (or filed) a marriage license or marriage certificate. (via TMZ)

 

►Update! Oct 26th, 2023: Ye and Bianca ARE legally married after all. According to this article from Page Six citing an Exclusive released by the Daily Mail on Oct. 6, 2023, the couple filed a confidential marriage license in 2022 to keep the details of their marriage secret. Confidential marriage licenses are only available in California, and do not become public record after they're filed. Without an official marriage license, West and Censori aren't legally married. This means that the private ceremony the couple held was only ceremonial – similar to a commitment ceremony. 

 

• What happens during a commitment ceremony?

 

Still, many news outlets are ignoring this important point: referring to the couple as married, posting photos of Kanye's 'wedding ring' and calling Censori his 'new wife,' and stirring up rumors of new family fueds. 

 

That's bad reporting, sure, but it's also a big disservice to real engaged couples. The marriage process is confusing enough without this kind of misinformation making headlines!

Whatever you might think about Ye, this is a good reminder that it’s always a couple’s responsibility to apply for a marriage license, and to bring the valid license with them to their ceremony.

After the ceremony, the couple’s wedding officiant will sign and complete the license. Each state has its own guidelines for who can legally solemnize a marriage (perform a wedding).
