How to Fill Out Oklahoma Marriage License: Example & FAQs

1. How to Fill Out an Oklahoma Marriage License (for the Officiant)

In Oklahoma, the marriage license and marriage certificate are a single, combined document. The top portion of the document – the marriage license – is signed by the clerk when the couple picks up their license. The bottom portion – the certificate of marriage – is filled in following the wedding ceremony. It must be completed by the wedding officiant, two adult witnesses, and the couple.

Couples must bring their marriage license and certificate with them to the wedding ceremony. It’s the couple’s responsibility to purchase the marriage license before the wedding day, and the wedding officiant’s responsibility to ensure it’s completed and returned promptly following the ceremony.

These step-by-step instructions can help you get started:

Use black ink or dark blue ink only (per the Canadian County Court Clerk's office). This is important; using another color might prevent your license from being accepted. Please be sure to print legibly (no cursive except for signatures).

Print your name and "Official / Clerical Designation;" if you’re ordained with AMM, write "Minister."

Print the name of your “Court or Congregation.” This is the name of the organization that gives you the authority to perform marriages, and for most officiants this is the church that ordained you. For AMM Ministers, write “American Marriage Ministries.”

According to our contact at the Court Clerk’s office in Edmond, the officiant will fill in the blanks with the City, County, and State where they currently live in the following line: “Of [blank], in [blank] County, State of [blank].”

However, we recommend you refer to the sample certificate you received when applying for your license before completing this section, or call the clerk’s office directly for instructions. Each county is a little different, and some counties may want you to write the City, County, and State where your ordaining church is located instead. For AMM Ministers, this would be “Of [Seattle], in [King] County, State of [Washington].”

Two adult witnesses and the couple will sign the marriage certificate along with the wedding officiant. Witnesses must include their current postal addresses. Newlyweds will print and sign the document using their full married names – “to be known as” following the marriage.

The completed license and certificate must be returned to the issuing office before the expiration date (within 30 days of issuance). The issuing office is the court clerk’s office where the couple first applied for their license.

For 2026 weddings and beyond: As of 2022, OK marriage licenses no longer ask where an officiant’s credentials are registered. Local minister registration is no longer required to officiate a wedding in Oklahoma, only your ordination is needed.

3. How to Fix a Mistake on an Oklahoma Marriage License

If you make a mistake while filling out a marriage license – such as a misspelled name, incorrect date, or the wrong county name – the couple may need to purchase a replacement license for you to fill out with the accurate information before it can be filed with the clerk.

Yes, ministers who are ordained online through a reputable and recognized church, including American Marriage Ministries, can officiate weddings in Oklahoma and sign your marriage license. No local registration is needed, which means once you've ordained, you’re good to go.

6. How Long Does it Take to Get a Marriage License in Oklahoma? (Waiting Period)

The amount of time you spend in the clerk’s office will vary depending on where you apply for your license. But because there’s no waiting period in Oklahoma for adults, most couples can apply for a marriage license and use it on the same day. If you’re under the age of 18, however, there is a mandatory 72-hour waiting period between applying for an issuing a license.
