You’ve heard of engagement parties, bridal showers, and bach parties, but what about a prenup party? Although any chance to gather over drinks or dessert is a good one, this unconventional gathering can be surprisingly sweet!
Let’s take a look at what a prenup party is, and why you might want to have one.
A ‘prenup,’ or ‘prenuptial agreement,’ is a legal contract signed by both partners before the wedding day. It outlines how your personal assets and debts will be divided if the marriage ends. It can also address spousal support, expectations within the relationship, infidelity, and even how often your in-laws visit – whatever’s important to you.
Prenuptial agreements are legally binding; each partner agrees to specific terms in the marriage, and any potential divorce.
There are lots of reasons you might want to sign a prenup. Most often, prenups help clarify each person’s expectations and responsibilities in the relationship. Some of these are financial – like terms that ensure both partners are provided for in the future, or terms for how assets and debts are divided. And some are emotional – such as agreeing to scheduled date nights or weekly couple’s therapy.
You might also want a prenup to ensure you maintain ownership of a family heirloom or property if the marriage ends, or that your children from a previous relationship receive fair financial support.
Since every marriage is different, every prenup is too.
Prenup parties are a relatively new idea and put a fun twist on an often-misunderstood step towards marriage. They give couples the chance to celebrate an important milestone in their relationship: reaching a harmonious and mutually-satisfying prenuptial agreement!
A prenup party can be celebrated with friends and family, your legal team, or just between the two of you. You can celebrate at home with a bottle of wine and takeout, or hit the town for dancing and drinks. What ever feels right to you to honor this milestone.

Who said prenuptial agreements can’t be romantic? Although it might seem odd at first, prenups can encourage open communication, trust, and full transparency between couples – making them a great first step in your marriage. Why not sign and celebrate this step together?
Whether you celebrate with family, or just a party of two, take time to honor the practical side of romance!
