What is a prenup? 

 

A ‘prenup,’ or ‘prenuptial agreement,’ is a legal contract signed by both partners before the wedding day. It outlines how your personal assets and debts will be divided if the marriage ends. It can also address spousal support, expectations within the relationship, infidelity, and even how often your in-laws visit – whatever’s important to you. 

 

Prenuptial agreements are legally binding; each partner agrees to specific terms in the marriage, and any potential divorce.

 

Why do couples get a prenup? 

 

There are lots of reasons you might want to sign a prenup. Most often, prenups help clarify each person’s expectations and responsibilities in the relationship. Some of these are financial – like terms that ensure both partners are provided for in the future, or terms for how assets and debts are divided.
