Legislators in Maryland will discuss whether or not to add ‘video conferencing’ to the list of ways couples in Anne Arundel County can apply for a marriage license and conduct their marriage ceremony.
This bill, Senate Bill 54, was first introduced in a prior session as SB 289.
If passed, SB 54 would add a subsection to the Maryland Family Code allowing couples marrying in Anne Arundel County to apply for their marriage license with the clerk using video-conference technology (audio visual communication).
The bill would also allow authorized wedding officiants to perform a remote marriage ceremony using video-conferencing technology.
Under the new subsection, wedding officiants and couples would be able to participate in a virtual wedding ceremony, with the officiant and couple in different locations, as long as the couple are together in a single location, and all participants are physically located within Anne Arundel County.
The new law would only affect couples marrying in Anne Arundel County, which neighbors Baltimore City and includes Annapolis, Crofton, Crownsville, Friendship, and other towns.
Any approved changes would take effect on October 1, 2022.
