The average wedding dress costs about $2,000, and that’s just an off-the-rack wedding dress! A custom wedding dress costs about $6,000, and most designer gowns start at around $10,000 each. With a price tag that big, it’s no wonder that many frugal brides choose DIY dresses or thrifted wedding dress options instead.
Still, some of the handmade dresses we’ve seen take that DIY wedding spirit to the extreme!
The unusual wedding dresses below are so original, so unique, and so delightfully weird that we can’t help but admire them. These budget-conscious brides went beyond ‘nontraditional’ to create designs that are truly unexpected. It’s impressive – even if we might not choose them for our own weddings.

This Chinese bride made her own wedding dress using leftover cement bags, which were lying around after renovating her home.
This edible wedding dress was made by baker Valentyn Shtefano in 2006 for his beautiful bride Viktoriya. It was constructed from 1,500 cream puffs and took 2 months to make – but Viktoriya could even walk around in it!

Who says plastic dinnerware is single use? This African bride wore a stunning wedding dress made entirely from plastic spoons, plastic cups, and plastic plates.
This bride constructed a wedding dress from Taco Bell wrappers in 2017, in a bid to win a free wedding ceremony at the company’s flagship Las Vegas location.
