This original wedding ceremony script, written by AMM Minister Raquel Solomon, is inspired by true love, new beginnings, and the African American wedding tradition of ‘jumping the broom.’
This heartfelt script begins with a friendly welcome and simple ‘unplugged’ ceremony announcement. Next, the officiant shares a few sweet words on marriage, followed by an exchange of traditional wedding vows and rings, with an option to include personal written vows.
The ceremony closes with the couple holding hands and jumping over a symbolic broom placed near the altar or ceremonial space – literally ‘jumping the broom’!
Before the jump, the wedding officiant describes the symbolism and meaning of the ritual to the guests, and encourages them to celebrate the couple’s joyful new beginning together. Use this sample wording as-is, or modify it to suit your individual needs and ceremony style.
“As our bride and groom (or substitute "happy couple") jump, they physically and spiritually cross the threshold into the land of matrimony. Today it represents great joy and at the same time serves as a reminder of the past.
It marks the beginning of making a home together. It symbolizes the sweeping away of the old and the welcoming of the new; the sweeping away of all negative energy, making way for all things that are good to come into your lives. It is also a call of support for the marriage from the entire community of family and friends.
The leap they take together over the broom is a gesture they take of dedication to working together through the tough times ahead, as well as the easy times. They leave behind the past and jump into the future together secure in their love.”
The ceremony closes with a simple pronouncement and a straightforward introduction of the couple.
This officiant script is perfect for non-denominational, religious, or non-religious wedding ceremonies, and for couples who wish to include a fun and meaningful unity ceremony in their wedding day.
Note: ‘Jumping the broom’ is a popular tradition in African American and Black wedding celebrations. A similar ‘broom jumping’ tradition is sometimes included in Celtic and Pagan weddings, when a couple jumps over a besom ('jumping the besom', a besom wedding tradition). Although the origins of these rituals are unique, the wording in this script can be easily modified and adapted for use in a besom wedding ceremony as well.
This custom wedding ceremony script was written by AMM Minister and experienced wedding officiant and notary Raquel Solomon, based in Sacramento, California.
