Today is June 1, marking the start of what is widely known as Pride Month, honoring New York’s Stonewall riots of 1969 and celebrating the LGBTQ community.
The Stonewall Riots were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ community against a discriminatory police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. The riots lasted five nights and served as a galvanizing moment for the LGBTQ activist community to unite in a nationwide movement fighting for LGBTQ rights. The following year of action culminated on the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in the Christopher Street Liberation Day March, an organized march considered to be the first Pride.
American Marriage Ministries’ mission is rooted in social justice and human rights. Our primary belief, and the very foundation of our community and organization is that All people, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, have the right to marry.
Through our free services and resources we promote marriage equality, celebrate diversity, and encourage everyone to express their love in a way that is authentic and meaningful.
AMM was created to protect marriage rights for all people, and to ensure that all couples could choose a wedding officiant that celebrated their love and values.
Pride Month will be different this year. Not just because of COVID-19, but because it underscores the ongoing prejudice and discrimination that runs rampant in our nation, and its devastating effects.
Now, it is more important than ever to stand together to fight for human rights and equality.
Pride Month is celebrated all over the world – and even though this year’s festivities might look and feel different, we strongly encourage you to support your community and advocate on behalf of those who suffer from injustice, hate, and discrimination.
