Becoming a shaman is a lifelong spiritual journey that requires a willingness to undergo profound personal transformation, and an enduring dedication to serving and healing others. However, because shamanic training and initiation aren’t regulated by a central governing body – like, say, the Catholic Church – it can be difficult for shamans to obtain the legal authorization to perform weddings for members of their spiritual communities.
The path to Shamanic initiation is unique from that of other faiths, in part because of the diverse nature of Shamanism itself. Considered the oldest spiritual practice in the world, Shamanism crosses many borders and embodies many traditions, cultures, and denominations. There’s no one way to practice Shamanism, and no one path toward initiation.
Traditional Shamanic initiation often follows seven stages, starting with “The Call,” which can be a sudden call from the spirits or ancestors, a deep shamanic illness or crisis, or a profound spiritual awakening. Other signs of shamanic initiation often include intense dreams and visions, and once called, shamans undergo years of study with a mentor or community. Separating from the confines of ordinary life and their old roles, shamans learn about medicinal plants, local cultural and indigenous spiritual practices, trance techniques, spiritual solitude, and healing principles. This is an admirable undertaking which requires ongoing dedication and sacrifice.

Shamans dedicate their lives to the service of others, but it can be very difficult to find a shaman who can legally perform your marriage ritual! Spiritual weddings are often officiated by Shamanic ministers, practicing Shamans, earth-based spiritual wedding officiants, and friends or family members with a close relationship to the couple.
In the United States, friends and family members can serve this important role by first getting ordained online for free, through a nondenominational church like American Marriage Ministries (AMM). So, while our ordination cannot be equated to the years required for traditional Shamanic initiation and spiritual study, and is not in any way an alternative, it’s a great way for practicing Shamans to legally officiate weddings.

Without this accessible pathway to ordination, it would be difficult for many modern Shamans to become legally recognized as initiated Shamanic leaders in the United States, and to officiate weddings and other important ceremonies for their communities.

American Marriage Ministries (AMM) ordains people of all faiths and backgrounds, including Spiritualists, Shamans, Buddhists, Wiccans, Atheists, Agnostics, and many others – provided that they agree to our church’s three guiding tenets:
As a federally-recognized 501(c)(3) Charitable Organization, we believe that what unites us isn’t if we pray, or who we pray to. What unites all of us is our shared humanity. This broad approach allows us to welcome ministers of any religious or nonreligious background, and offer our ideological and spiritual support and acceptance.
This universal acceptance is essential to one of our primary functions as a church: To ensure that all people have equal access to the benefits and protections of marriage, and the opportunity to celebrate the act of marriage with their friends, families, and communities in their own authentic way.
