Writing your own wedding vows? Add these promises to your vows to make them more meaningful

Writing your own wedding vows? Don’t forget to make meaningful promises for the future!

Wedding vows are more than a chance to tell your partner how much you love them. They’re also an opportunity to make meaningful promises for the future and all the happy years of marriage ahead. These wedding promises should reflect your hopes, your dreams, and what being a loving spouse means to you.

Your wedding vows should include the promises that matter most to you in your marriage. Wedding experts recommend that your vows be under 2 minutes long, which means that you have limited time to say what you want to say. You have to be intentional about it! You might want to promise your partner everything under the sun, plus the moon and the stars, but specific promises that reflect what’s special about your relationship will be the most meaningful.

For example, simple wedding vows written in the ‘I promise’ style might be written this way:

“I (name) take you (name) to be my wife/husband/spouse. I promise to trust and respect you, and to always let you choose the first movie on Friday night. I promise to comfort you and care for you, and to nurture our love for all the days of my life. But most of all I promise to accept and adore you just as you are, my beautiful wife/husband/spouse. I love you!”

Consider the type of promises that are important to you and your partner: Promises that reflect your faith, your personal values, the things that are important to your partner’s happiness, things that will make your partner smile, and the type of marriage you want to have.

  • There are many ways to write wedding vows! Don't like 'I promise' wedding vows? No problem! See more examples of wedding vow wording and structure here: Wedding Vow Examples

Wedding Vows: ‘I Promise to…’

Add These Sweet Wedding Promises to Your Written Vows

Choose your favorites from the list of wedding promises below, then add them to existing wedding vow examples to make them more meaningful.

Mix it up:  Use 'I vow,' 'I pledge,' or a simple 'I will,' in place of 'I promise.'

  • I promise to treat you with respect and kindness.

  • I promise to treat you with compassion and an open heart.

  • I promise to put you first.
  • I promise to trust you.
  • I promise to support you on good days and bad.
  • I promise to be your friend, the one who stands beside you through life’s ups and downs.

  • I promise to never take your love and companionship for granted.

Funny Wedding Promises

  • I promise to never make you watch horror movies after dark.
  • I promise to never steal all the apple fritters out of the box before you can have one.
  • I promise to sing along with you in the car, even when it’s nothing but Taylor Swift for miles and miles and miles.
  • I promise to always put the toilet seat down, so we never have a repeat of that night – which I promise never to speak of again.
  • I promise that if I ever get a superpower, like teleportation or flight, I’ll use it to steal you cool stuff and make date nights more fun.
  • I promise that Grand Theft Auto and Witcher will never come between us. I’ll take breaks to eat with you, clean with you, kiss you, and take adventures with you.
  • I promise not to make a big deal about it when (my favorite team) beats (your favorite team), even though they'll win most of the time.
  • I promise to laugh at all of your jokes, even the new material, and to keep the heckling to a minimum.
  • I promise to always be honest with you about your pants. Good or bad, I’ve got your back.

Offbeat Wedding Promises

  • I promise to take care of my health so that we can grow old and wrinkled together, which means the doctor and the dentist, I know.
  • I promise not to take myself too seriously, even if I’m a little extra.
  • I promise to have fun with you, to make time to play with you, no matter how busy life gets.
  • I promise to always challenge you to be the best version of yourself, the way you always bring out the best version of me.
  • I promise to never stop chasing you around in the mornings, trying to sneak one more kiss before work.
  • I promise not to take myself too seriously.
  • I promise to save you the last slice of pie / last donut / last french fry.
  • I promise to give you unlimited veto powers on date nights.

  • I promise to always love and support you, even when we disagree on something.
  • I promise to let you sleep-in on Sundays even when the yard work is calling…
  • I promise to love, comfort, and protect you every day, even when you’re all grown up.
  • I promise to respect your privacy and individuality.
  • I promise that you will always be at the center of our hearts and the center of our family.
  • I promise to be grateful for you and our family every day. I have always wanted to be a mom/dad, and I am so excited that I get to be your ‘bonus’ mom/dad.
  • I promise to teach you how to drive, how to face life’s challenges head on, and how to beat your mom/dad at Mario Kart.
