Maybe you’ve seen the news articles that claim today’s couples are forced to choose between planning a wedding and putting a downpayment on a house, or articles that encourage couples to take on new debt to fund the celebration…
Like this article, for example, titled “What Costs More in Buffalo – A House or a Wedding?,” which says that “Because they’re so expensive, many couples will have to choose between having a wedding or buying a house. Both are an enormous financial expense.” (via WYRK)
Or this one, which begins with the headline, “I can only afford one: a house or a wedding — how do I decide, especially if my partner disagrees?” In the article, a late 20-something laments, “When buying a house and having a wedding are both vague cards that might be played in the next few years, how do you prioritize? Because I feel like as the cost of weddings and houses rise, so does my anxiety.” (via Business Insider)
Or maybe this one, “Best credit cards for wedding expenses: Get rewarded for food, hotel and honeymoon costs,” which seems to assume that couples will take on new debt just to have the ‘perfect’ wedding experience. (via CNBC)
These types of articles are everywhere. Even Netflix joined the conversation a couple years ago with their (totally tone deaf) ‘Marriage or Mortgage.’
But this is completely off base!
Although we can’t do anything about (outrageous) housing rates that put home ownership out of reach for many Americans, we do have some solid advice on how to plan a low-cost wedding ceremony.
If you want to drop some cash on a big wedding bash, we won’t judge you.
But we do want you to know that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy a memorable, meaningful, fun wedding. And you definitely don’t have to go into debt to get married.
Remember… You’re starting a long and happy marriage, and you’ll have more opportunities to celebrate your love in the years ahead!
