Proposed New Jersey Amendment to "Authorize Persons Serving Overseas in Military to be Married or Enter into Civil Union by Video Conference or Other Electronic Means”

Published: Wednesday, Jan. 22nd, 2020

Lawmakers in New Jersey have proposed an amendment regarding marriage by proxy. But don’t worry – this revision will be a good one!

Legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Ronald Dancer includes an update to current New Jersey marriage law, which could soon "authorize persons serving overseas in military to be married or enter into civil union by video conference or other electronic means.”

What does this mean, exactly?

First of all, this general scenario – when one or more persons getting married is not present – is called a marriage by proxy....(continued)

A Catholic Ordination Controversy Underscores the Importance of Online Ordination

Leo xiii 2

Published: Thursday, Jan. 16th, 2020

An online petition titled “Stop Ordination of Female Episcopalian ‘Bishop’ at Catholic Church” is making its way around the internet in an effort to prevent a Catholic Church in Richmond, Virginia from consecrating Rev. Susan B. Haynes as the new bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia.

Petitioners argue that ordaining a woman is against the rules. They say the Catholic Church doesn’t recognize Anglican ordinations, and that this isn’t legit. However, Bishop Barry Knestout, who supports the ordination, has responded to criticism by saying that it is an “offer of hospitality to a Christian neighbor in need.”

New Hampshire Lawmakers Propose Special Wedding Officiant License

Nh plag

Published: Thursday, Jan. 2nd, 2020

Folks looking to officiate weddings in New Hampshire might be able to sign up for a special marriage officiant license -- if legislation introduced for the state’s 2020 legislative session passes. The proposed license would “temporarily authorize an individual to solemnize a marriage.”

Each limited-use license would authorize someone to solemnize the civil marriage designated on the registration form, and provide the officiant with proof of such authority from the secretary of state.

New Hampshire allows ordained ministers and judges to officiate weddings. But for folks that don’t want to get ordained online by organizations like American Marriage Ministries (we’re are all about options here), this new license would open up the space to officiate weddings. ...(continued)

New Tennessee Marriage Law is an Attack On Religious Freedom, and Rights Of Non-Traditional Ministers

Screen shot 2019 05 30 at 10.31.08 am

Published: Thursday, May. 30th, 2019

Tennessee’s legislature has passed a law that takes away the rights of non-traditional ministers to officiate weddings. The new law, SB1377/HB0213, is the sort of government overreach that our founding fathers warned of, and represents a massive step back for religious freedom.

Effective July 1, 2019, the government of Tennessee has made itself the arbiter of which ministers can, and can’t perform marriage in the state, stripping away the rights of tens-of-thousands of online-ordained ministers.

And that’s not all. With the same stroke of his pen, Governor Bill Lee turned Tennessee’s thousands of bureaucrats, government officers, and elected officials into wedding officiants. You heard that right: the new law literally strips private citizens of their rights to officiate weddings, and hands them directly to government bureaucrats. ...(continued)
