It’s been four years since the COVID pandemic turned the wedding world (and the rest of the world) topsy-turvy…
And for the thousands of couples who eloped in teeny-tiny ceremonies or online Zoom weddings – it’s time to renew those marriage vows!
Married couples across the country and around the world are planning 'second wedding' ceremonies this year. And with 5-year anniversaries just around the corner for couples who tied the knot in 2020, we expect to see even more full-size vow renewals next year.

These ‘second wedding’ celebrations go far beyond the typical vow renewal ceremony, and include many of the elements that a traditional first wedding would: A wedding officiant, wedding attendants, a real walk down the aisle, an exchange of marriage vows in front of friends and relatives, and even a fun reception or after party!

Why not plan a vow renewal ceremony that feels like the wedding you never had?
Second weddings (sometimes called sequel weddings) give married couples a chance to enjoy ‘the full wedding experience’ they missed during the COVID pandemic. They aren’t technically weddings (since the couple is already married), but they can be a wedding experience...
You know, all the good stuff that can come with a wedding day!
One Wedditor expressed the feeling perfectly:
“DH and I tied the knot (eloped) in January of 2021… Now that life has returned to somewhat normal and it has been 3.5 years since we got married, we are looking at options. We are both sad we did not get the big wedding, that [our] friends/family weren't there to celebrate, and that we don't even have any photos from the elopement.
I reached out to a friend yesterday who's also a pandemic bride and eloped and said she has these feelings too…
…I want the big party, I want to say my vows to my husband in front of everyone, I want the photos and memories but I feel we missed our window by eloping…” (See coca_evagria's full post on Reddit’s r/weddingplanning here.)
Can you relate?
Although there’s nothing wrong with a quickie courthouse wedding, or a sweet ‘just us’ elopement officiated by a friend – we love all types of marriage ceremonies! – a second wedding gives couples the chance to go BIG for the first time…
And take their vow renewal to a whole new level.
We love to see the love!
