Section I: Welcome & The Setup (0:00 - 2:15)
[GREET THE GUESTS WITH A WARM, CONFIDENT, AND DELIBERATE SMILE. LEAN INTO THE OPENING PAUSE TO CAPTURE THE ROOM]
"Welcome, family, friends, and loved ones. We are gathered here today for a moment that is both a wonderful destination and a brand-new beginning.
For those who may not know me, I'm Alvin. I have the distinct honor of serving as today's officiant, and the unique privilege of being the man who, for the last eleven years, has watched this relationship grow and flourish.
[PAUSE]
It is truly a blessing to be here today. When we look around at the world, we often see connections built on fleeting moments, short-term trends, or just digital convenience. But Thea and Luc did not discover one another through an algorithm. They met in a setting far more romantic, far more authentic, and far more likely to involve a passionate debate over tempo: Highland High School’s music room.
Thea, our radiant Vocalist, stood front and center, leading the melody, breathing life and emotion into every single note. And Luc, our exceptional Percussionist, took his place in the back, establishing the foundation, locking in the groove, and never missing a beat.
Their story isn't a casual romance; it is an eleven-year journey of true partnership. It is the coming together of Melody and Rhythm. And today, after more than a decade of practicing together, we are here to celebrate the official start of their longest and greatest tour: life together."
Section II: The Root Note and The Harmony of Opposites (2:15 - 4:45)
[TURN FULLY TO FACE THEA AND LUC. LOWER THE PITCH OF YOUR VOICE SLIGHTLY TO SHIFT THE MOOD FROM WITTY TO MEANINGFUL]
"Every lasting piece of music, from the simplest folk song to the grandest symphony, requires two core, essential elements: a compelling melody and a steady, reliable rhythm. Without both, the music simply cannot hold together.
Thea, you are that melody. You are the voice that carries the emotional weight of the song. You are the brilliant solo that naturally and effortlessly commands the room. Anyone who knows you knows that you possess true range—not just musically, but emotionally. You have an immense capacity for vibrant joy, deep empathy, fiercely loyal love, and an impressive ability to hit the highest of notes—whether you are performing on an actual stage or simply debating with Luc about the precise, mathematical alignment of new artwork on the living room wall.
[PAUSE FOR A LIGHT SMILE FROM THE COUPLE]
But a melody, no matter how beautiful, how intricate, or how perfectly delivered, requires a Root Note to give it meaning. Without that base, a melody is just a collection of notes drifting in the air, looking for a place to land.
Luc, you are that Root Note. You are Thea’s fundamental Tonic.
In any group, a drummer does not merely keep time; he provides the structural anchor that prevents the entire piece from falling apart. You are the definitive, reassuring home base she always resolves back to. Regardless of how high Thea’s melody climbs, how daring her paths become, or how complex life gets, you hold the foundation steady.
You are the patient, reliable, and solid constant ensuring that no matter how changing, unpredictable, or wild the music around you gets, the song is always moving back to a place of stability, resolution, and home.
For eleven years, you have been writing this unique arrangement together. You have stayed in time. You understood early on a truth that many musicians spend a lifetime trying to learn: that a powerful Root Note does not diminish or silence the melody; it allows it to soar. You do not simply back up Thea; you provide the unwavering foundation that allows her to be entirely, brilliantly, and beautifully herself."
Section III: A Father’s Counsel: Navigating the Noise (4:45 - 6:45)
[TAKE ONE STEP CLOSER TO THEM. STEP OUT OF THE "OFFICIANT" ROLE AND SPEAK PURELY AS ALVIN, THE FATHER]
As you step into this next chapter of your life, I want to offer you a piece of counsel, not just as the man wearing this robe, but as a father who has watched you grow, adapt, and build what you have today.
The world outside of your home can be incredibly noisy. There will be times when life throws off your timing. There will be seasons of unexpected key changes, moments where the stress of the world introduces discord into your song, and days where you feel like you are playing out of sync.
When those moments come—and they will—I want you to remember the discipline of that high school music room. Stop. Listen to one another. Luc, when the melody gets tense, don't rush the beat; hold the steady foundation even firmer. Thea, when the rhythm feels heavy, bring your grace and your light to the song.
Your partnership brings us to the core of the meaningful promises you make today: To Have and To Hold. To hold not merely the shared history of your past, but the key to your future harmony.
The balance of melody and rhythm you share shows the love you have intentionally built over the past decade. It is a sacred gift. Your union reflects a greater, perfect harmony—a blessing from God that keeps you both within His timing and His grace. Today, we recognize this love as a gift you have received, and a solemn promise you now choose to give back to one another."
[CALL TRACEY POTEET TO READ HER POEM]
[PRESENT MEMENTOS HERE]
(Slowly, purposefully pick up and hold up the Rhythm and Melody Keys so the entire assembly can see them)
"Thea and Luc, I present these tokens to you. They represent the tools you will use to keep your lives in tune.
Luc, as the Rhythm, I give you this Drum Key. May you always use your steady heart to quiet the external noise and hold the sacred rhythm of your home.
Thea, as the Melody, I give you this Treble Clef. May you always sing your truth with absolute confidence, knowing Luc is forever holding the steady beat that allows you to soar.
Keep these tokens close. You each hold the key to the other’s heart, and together, your rhythm and melody compose a beautiful, lasting song.”
Section IV: The Declaration of Intent & Ring Exchange (6:45 - 8:45)
[SET THE MEMENTOS DOWN. FACE THE COUPLE DIRECTLY. SPEAK WITH FORMAL DIGNITY]
"And so, having established this foundation of love, respect, and mutual harmony, I ask you now to declare your intentions before God and these witnesses.
Luc, do you take Thea to be your lawfully wedded wife, to live together in the holy covenant of marriage? Do you promise to love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others, remain completely faithful to her as long as you both shall live?"
(Luc looks into her eyes and responds: "I do.")
"Thea, do you take Luc to be your lawfully wedded husband, to live together in the holy covenant of marriage? Do you promise to love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others, remain completely faithful to him as long as you both shall live?"
(Thea looks into his eyes and responds: "I do.")
[TURN TO THE RING BEARER OR BEST MAN TO RECEIVE THE RINGS]
"Marriage requires a visible token of an invisible promise. These rings are unbroken circles, symbols of an unending, continuous cycle of love and fidelity. They are the physical anchors of the vows you make today.
Luc, take this ring, place it upon Thea's finger, and repeat after me:
Thea, I give you this ring / as a symbol of my love / and my constant fidelity. / With all that I am, / and all that I have, / I honor you."
(Luc repeats the words and slides the ring on)
"Thea, take this ring, place it upon Luc's finger, and repeat after me:
Luc, I give you this ring / as a symbol of my love / and my constant fidelity. / With all that I am, / and all that I have, / I honor you."
(Thea repeats the words and slides the ring on)
Section V: The Pronouncement (8:45 - 10:00)
[PAUSE FOR A MOMENT, LOOKING BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THEM, LETTING THE WEIGHT OF THE MOMENT SETTLE. THEN, ADDRESS THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY]
"Thea and Luc, you have spoken the words of commitment, you have exchanged these rings and symbolic tokens, and you have pledged your fidelity to one another before God and this witness of family and friends.
You have spent unforgettable years tuning your instruments, aligning your hearts, and perfecting your rhythm. Today, the rehearsal is officially over, and the true symphony begins.
Therefore, by the strength of the love that binds you, and by the authority vested in me, it is my absolute joy, my deepest pride, and my highest honor to pronounce you Husband and Wife.
Luc... you may now kiss your bride!"
[WAIT FOR THE KISS, THE CHEERS, AND THE APPLAUSE. LET IT PEAK. THEN, TURN TO THE GUESTS WITH A WARM, CELEBRATORY SMILE AND RAISED HANDS]
"Ladies and gentlemen, it is my distinct privilege and true pleasure to introduce to you for the very first time: Mr. and Mrs. Lucas and Thea Poteet!"
