Sometimes it is but for a brief moment in time, but if we are lucky it persists. Not just persists, but breathes and thrives in cycles of downs, when we must depend on one another to get through, and ups, when we feel so intoxicated that it is almost impossible to function. Since love is energy, it affects our biochemistry, physiology and psychology. To keep this energy flowing requires constant cultivation and effort. When singular, each of us have to first nurture our love of self so that we start a relationship with a solid foundation, saying, “I value myself and I am worthy of love”. Then when together in love we can better communicate, to the other half of our soul, our needs that will require a reciprocation of nurturing, saying “I value you and you are worthy of my love”. Joe and Kevin, we have gathered here today to tap into the love that has brought you together. That has kept you together for nearly 20 years. As you two look into each other's eyes, you feel awe, you embrace love, and you honor love in its truest sense.
Joe and Kevin, your souls are about to embark on a journey of truest singularity. You are, at this moment, two fragments of stardust, within an incredible expanse of universe, who will soon become one… metaphorically and lawfully. You are allowing the natural energy that swirls around us at this moment to carry your vows through this autumn air, out into the cosmos, where they will echo for time infinite. Therefore the words you are about to speak should come from a place of truth unconditional. May your heart-speak earn your union the blessings it deserves.
(Either you read your vows to one another or I mention the love note and desire to keep vows private)
Now we continue this ceremony with a ring exchange. Here is where we acknowledge the symbolism of rings. They are made of different materials and in different styles, but they remain infinitely cyclical. They are not symbols of possession. When exchanged in ceremonies such as this, you must consider them instead as a reminder that another human willingly shares your ideal of singularity and embraces you, and loves you enough to offer eternally his heart for you to cherish.
Joe, will you lovingly place your ring on Kevin’s finger? As you do this, please repeat after me: As a humble child of the universe | In all its beauty and wonder | Do I, Joe, solemnly vow | To unconditionally love, honor, and cherish Kevin | To be emotionally and intellectually present for all the ups and downs of his life | And to make the sacrifices necessary | To ensure his happiness is never forsaken | This is my truth | May it receive the blessings of all I consider sacred.
Kevin, will you lovingly place your ring on Joe’s finger? As you do this, please repeat after me: As a humble child of the universe | In all its beauty and wonder | Do I, Kevin, solemnly vow | To unconditionally love, honor, and cherish Joe | To be emotionally and intellectually present for all the ups and downs of his life | And to make the sacrifices necessary | To ensure his happiness is never forsaken | This is my truth | May it receive the blessings of all I consider sacred.
In the presence of our expansive universe, now sharing one heart, one soul, and intertwined energies, I now pronounce you as legally married. It is time to seal this union with a kiss.
