We are gathered here today to join Olivia Ruiz and Rebecca Lee in the spiritual union of marriage.
This contract is not to be entered into lightly but thoughtfully and seriously, and with a deep realization of its obligations and responsibilities. Please remember that love, loyalty, and understanding are the foundations of a happy and enduring home.
To the audience: We will now be doing a ceremony with the washing of hands. There is a Hawaiian tradition called “huawei.” Part of the tradition is whenever you make a significant spiritual passage in life, you ritualistically cleanse your spirit in a sacred body of water. The water is used for purification, and it is believed to bring lives and souls into balance.
To Rebecca & Olivia: The hand washing ceremony is a ritual cleansing on your wedding day honoring your transition into a married couple. Together you wash your hands in a glass bowl. As you wash your hands, you are washing away your past failures, relationships and mistakes, giving you a clean, fresh start into your marriage. The washing of your hands most importantly represents a complete and utter forgiveness
of yourselves. Recognizing that all you have gone and grown through up to this moment has been necessary for you to stand here with the depth, capacity, abilities, and compassion to love one another as deeply as you do. Therefore, from this day forward, your lives together are anew and nothing in your past can or will be held against you. Rebecca and Olivia will now share their vows.
*(THIS IS WHERE THE TWO OF YOU SAY YOUR PERSONAL VOWS TO ONE ANOTHER)*
Olivia first, then Rebecca.
Do you Olivia take this woman Rebecca to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, in good times and bad, for richer or poorer, keeping yourself unto her for as long as you both shall live?
*(Wait for Confirmation)*
