"The happy couple met in graduate school en route to their doctorates, which they both completed, the groom's defense was in 2021. I was "on deck" as a favor to the MOB in case the "primary" officiant fell through. Of course they did. It was my first time and most of the attendees were strangers. I didn't have time to memorize my remarks, as I barely had time to finish writing them days before the event, so reading from my verbatim notes in my AMM portfolio was not ideal. Still, it went well under the circumstances. My primary goal was to not be a distraction; to not be memorable in a negative way. I was told I succeeded. I (somewhat) jokingly asked the attendees to "grade me on a curve" during my opening remarks, which was a nice ice-breaker (for me at least!) just before they took their seats for the processional. Also as an ice-breaker, I also intentionally used the wrong name of the bride, "If you're here for the JACKson-Erickson wedding...you're in the wrong place. But if you're here for the JOHNson-Erickson wedding, thank you for coming and please be seated." This helped me relax and catch my breath. I was thankful it was always intended to be a casual, non-denominational unity ceremony. The only stumbling point was the ring exchange: I remembered the bride telling me I would simply announce the exchange, and not orate during, and she surprised me by asking if I was going to speak during the exchange itself. All-in-all, while I don't think I'd like to make a habit of this, I was honored to be a part of such a special day for this young couple of dynamos. "
