Invocation
"Please be seated. Friends, we have been invited here today to share with Alyson and Doug a very
important moment in their lives. In the years they have been together, their love and
understanding of each other has grown and matured, and now they have decided to live
their lives together as husband and wife."
Annecdote
"I was honored to be asked to perform this ceremony for my Sister and very soon-to-be Brother-In-Law, though it did not take me long to realize that they waited to ask me until they knew I was going to be able to perform one other wedding before theirs.... as a practice. I have always believed in the importance of family and I am thrilled to be able to help add to that family today. That being said, in order to properly marry Doug and Alyson, I had to learn about their journey to this point. They say you shouldn't find someone who tries to change you. I agree with that sentiment, but it leaves out one important factor... that while your significant other should not try to change you, you will still change. The deeper your love for someone, the more you find yourself wanting to be a part of the facets of that person's life that you were never into before and the more you want that person to take part in your own hobbies and interests. Not many people dive straight into these changes as quick or as deep as Alyson and Doug. For those of you who don't know, my Sister has always been fairly, how to say it.... clumsy and accident prone. So imagine my surprise to hear she was going on a ski trip, having never learned to ski, and was taking up bike riding. Now, that ski trip with Doug and his friends is an annual event and I don't know if a morning goes by that I don't see a Facebook post from Alyson on a bike (even though it is usually a stationary one at the gym). Now no loving relationship should be one sided, so I had to do some digging to learn what hobbies Doug took on as a result of his love for Alyson. He took on her love of getting massages (then again, who wouldn't), but I did not learn about the big habit he has inherited from my sister until they were planning this wedding weekend. Alyson was in the midst of planning the hair and make-up appointments for all the girls, who, on a side note, all look beautiful and then asked my fiancee Vicky if she wanted to join the ladies for mani/pedis the prior to the rehearsal dinner. Vicky said yes, and then Alyson turned to ask me. I politely declined stating that not only did I have no interest, but I did not want to horn in on their girl time to which Alyson responded, "It won't be girl time, Doug will be there." Yes, apparently as part of his new found love of pampering, Doug has developed quite the taste for having his nails done. Now if that isn't bonding, I don't know what is. Through their years together Alyson and Doug's love for each other has led them to many adventures and memories together culminating with the joyous occasion we are gathered for today."

LOVE
~ By Roy Croft ~
"I love you,
Not only for what you are,
But for what I am
When I am with you.
I love you,
Not only for what
You have made of yourself,
But for what
You are making of me.
I love you
For the part of me
That you bring out;
I love you
For putting your hand
Into my heaped-up heart
And passing over
All the foolish, weak things
That you can't help
Dimly seeing there,
And for drawing out
Into the light
All the beautiful belongings
That no one else had looked
Quite far enough to find.
I love you because you
Are helping me to make
Of the lumber of my life
Not a tavern
But a temple;
Out of the works
Of my every day
Not a reproach
But a song.
I love you
Because you have done
More than any creed
Could have done
To make me good,
And more than any fate
To make me happy.
You have done it
Without a touch,
Without a word,
Without a sign.
You have done it
By being yourself."
The next reading will be done by Monica Jett, Doug's sister.
“How Falling in Love is Like Owning a Dog” by Taylor Mali:
On cold winter nights, love is warm.
It lies between you and lives and breathes
and makes funny noises.
Love wakes you up all hours of the night with its needs.
It needs to be fed so it will grow and stay healthy.
Love doesn’t like being left alone for long.
But come home and love is always happy to see you.
It may break a few things accidentally in its passion for life,
but you can never be mad at love for long.
Is love good all the time? No! No!
Love can be bad. Bad, love, bad! Very bad love.
Love makes messes.
Love leaves you little surprises here and there.
Love needs lots of cleaning up after.
Sometimes you just want to get love fixed.
Sometimes you want to roll up a piece of newspaper
and swat love on the nose,
not so much to cause pain,
just to let love know, “Don’t you ever do that again!”
Sometimes love just wants to go out for a nice long walk.
Because love loves exercise. It will run you around the block
and leave you panting, breathless. Pull you in different directions
at once, or wind itself around and around you
until you’re all wound up and you cannot move.
But love makes you meet people wherever you go.
People who have nothing in common but love
stop and talk to each other on the street.
Throw things away and love will bring them back,
again, and again, and again.
But most of all, love needs love, lots of it.
And in return, love loves you and never stops.
