Why You Need to Choose Your Wedding Officiant Early

A recent wedding industry survey by WeddingWire found that most couples choose their wedding officiant, on average, about three months before their wedding.

Based on that same survey, the wedding officiant was among the last of the vendors chosen, with only transportation ranking lower.

Couples: Are you seriously choosing your florist before the person that will make or break your wedding ceremony?

This finding exposes one of the biggest oversights in wedding planning: the most important part of the wedding experience gets the least preparation. That’s like starting to study for a test the night before. Don’t make that mistake!

When AMM Minister Christopher Dexheimer was asked to officiate his brother’s wedding, it was a joyous conclusion to a story with a dark beginning. That story began when the bride and groom both – unbeknownst to each other -- checked into Sierra Tucson, a psychiatric hospital and treatment center for those dealing with substance abuse.

Well… truth be told, this is also about the start of a beautiful story, since that same psychiatric hospital set the stage for a relationship that blossomed between Alba Hancock and Robbie Dexheimer. ...(continued)

Thinking of Walking Down the Aisle Alone? We Asked Former Brides how they did it…

Samoyeds and couple

Published: Friday, Nov. 30th, 2018

We recently received an email from a bride who was planning her ceremony and wanted to walk down the aisle alone, and asking for our advice. Since it wasn’t the first time we’ve been asked that question, we figured this is a discussion worth having here on American Weddings, so here goes. We’re always interested in hearing from you, so make sure to follow us on social media and tell us about your experiences!

Dear AMM,

I’m not very close to my father, and we never had much of a relationship, to be totally honest. And while I could have someone else walk me down the aisle, I would rather just walk by myself. I've always been an independent sort of person, and I see this as a statement of my autonomy. Is this common, and what should I keep in mind if I go this route? -- Shelby in Albuquerque

Blindfolded Guests Experience Wedding Ceremony from Bride’s Perspective

It’s not often that a wedding ceremony concept leaves us speechless, but Robbie Campbell and Stephanie Agnew’s Nov. 25 nuptials reminded us just how powerful each couple’s lives and experiences are. In Stephanie’s case, she’s blind. To help their guests understand what this meant to them, and how she experiences the world, the couple handed out blindfolds that the guests wore during the ceremony.

“When we lose one of our senses, the others become heightened, which allows us to experience something as beautiful as these vows in a totally unique way,” their officiant told the blindfolded guests. “Today, we get to experience that in Steph’s way.”

Get the (Wedding) Party Started Right With a Great Ceremony!

Published: Tuesday, Nov. 27th, 2018

The wedding ceremony sets the tone for the rest of the wedding celebration, from the entrance of the bride to the start of the cocktail hour and reception  - when the real party kicks off!  If you have ever been to a wedding with a great ceremony, you probably noticed that the guests left the ceremony and carried those feelings of love and joy into the reception - and well into the night.  A great wedding ceremony starts the whole experience off on a positive note.

“The wedding ceremony sets the tone for how the guests will see the couple’s relationship,” explains Stan, a wedding officiant from the Houston area. “If the couple has a good mix of love and laughter, their ceremony should reflect that, instead of being boring and full of negative marriage advice.”  ...(continued)
